Thanks Ladies...

Yeah...the baggy granny panties are not very sexy.

The wrap skirt is a great idea! Something very much worth looking into, since my last skirt just went bye bye because it kept falling off me. LOL.

I will recommend the 30 Day Vegan Cleanse I did last month, it was a huge help in boosting my metabolism, not to mention very inexpensive and very creative, and simple to do. I did the workshop, but the Heather of Beauty that Moves is putting it into an Ebook.
Here's her blog address if anyone is interested.

Here's a random idea: you know when you look up books on the library card catalog and they show you the Library of Congress subcategories, like "Holistic Self-Care" or "Quick Vegetarian Cooking"? That might be a way to discover topics that are manageable in 4 weeks, because often some very specific things come up.

Congrats, Anita! That's awesome. I would try some wrap skirts or dresses---that way as you shrink you can just cinch them a little tighter. Keep up the great work!

sounds like you are suffering from the thing i like to think of as the imagined perfect life syndrome. it's a "grass is always greener" thing. we always think everything would be perfect if we just had XYZ. try to think about the things you like about your current life. there are probably just as many drawbacks to city living anyway.

We my family and I live 45 minutes outside of St. Louis. Lately every time I go into the city for something, I find my self swooning over the homes, restaurants, shops, the hustle and bustle of it all. I'm thinking dreamy thoughts of moving to the city. I've even told my husband, it would make our lives so much more simple. Because he commutes to the city for work 4 days a week and with gas prices it's putting a real strain on our budget. Than to top it all off, we attend our church in the middle of the city. It's a real awesome church worth the hour drive it takes to get there. Yet we will drive back home to our little French town and sleep here and day dream of one day moving to the city.

What's stopping us. The housing market here sucks! We probably won't get what we owe on our house at this point. Which is sad. Could someone just tell me if it's meant to be it will be. =D

Listen up ladies. In the past 14 months I have lost a total of 58 pounds! Whoo! I know. I have about 70 more pound to go. I know! I'm trying to keep my wardrobe to a minimum because for every 10 to 15 pounds I loose my clothes become baggy. Even my undies because blooming big. I call them granny panties when they do. LOL. I need style suggests for this summer. I'm planning to loose at least 20 pounds over the summer and I do still have weight on 70 pounds. I want to look classy, and not too frumpy, but cute. Ideas???

Totally understand Sarah. I'm getting ready to dive into Ree Drummond- The Pioneer Woman' romance book Black Heels to Tracker Wheels. I'm a huge fan of her blog and recipes. I think it's because I'm from Oklahoma myself. I grew up not 50 miles from where her ranch is. So I'm ready to read a bit and find myself day dreaming of tornadoes and cowboys again. :)

Hi everyone,
A year and a half ago I graduated with my PhD, so obviously I have an affinity for school. And even though I don't want to go back (and couldn't afford to even if I did) I feel the need to be learning new stuff. NPR sustained me over the past year but now I've decided to pick a topic a month and learn everything I can about it, taking notes and so forth. I just need a bit of help thinking of topics grand enough to keep my interest for a month and small enough that I can get a pretty firm handle on what it's about in four weeks time. I am open to suggestions. Like a list of three things you would reccomend me devoting my intellectual energy to would be great. Thanks.

Anita, I've wondered about that book! So glad to hear you like it. I'm kind of in-between books, but about to soon to start an Elizabeth Taylor biography that was recommended to me. After a long winter, I think I need a taste of glamour!

I just finish reading Karen Maezen Miller's book, Hand Wash Cold Care Instructions For An Ordinary Life, I'm not a Buddhist, but I found the book very inspiring. If you liked Eat, Pray, Love you'll love this book. I actually found this book to be better actually than Eat, Love, Pray. Karen also has a blog called Cherrio Road, which I find very encouraging. http://www.karenmaezenmiller.com/blog.

I am always struggling with lunch too! When I don't think I'll have leftovers, I make a big pot of quinoa the night before and then portion it into lunch sized tupperwares as a salad base. Then I'll add whatever I have to make a meal--today was chopped apple, slivered almond slices, cubes of sharp cheddar, and balsamic. I also like it with black beans, avocado, and cheese, or with chick peas and raisins. Tons of combinations work, and quinoa is a complete protein so it's pretty filling, too.

I have this exact problem too and will be interested in other's responses! I love bringing leftovers and never want to put the effort into actually making a lunch, but sometimes it is necessary. I'm impressed by your making homemade frozen meals for the office freezer... what a good idea!

Sometimes I just make a plain old pbj and have it with an apple and chips. It can also be fun to bring in some hummus (homemade or store bought) with pita bread or pita chips, sliced veggies, olives, etc! And this morning I saw this easy recipe which I think I'm going to throw together tonight for lunch tomorrow... http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/the-can-o-beans-lunch-avocadolime-black-beans-125550 Sounds delicious with some tortilla chips to scoop it up.

Right now, I'm in the midst of Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton. I'm really enjoying it.
Up next, for my book club, is High Fidelity by Nick Hornby.

Hello everyone!
I've been struggling to find some inspiration when it comes to lunch. I work in an office with access to a fridge and microwave. I tend to bring leftovers from dinner often, but on days when there are no leftovers, I really get stuck on what to eat.
Once a month or so I make a big batch of something to freeze and keep in the office freezer. Some of my usuals are lentil soup, black bean/sweet potato burritos and chili.
Anyone have some new ideas?

Andie,
Take heart! I think it is totally doable and in a way this might be an easier challenge in the winter since many hearty, cold weather dishes are based on grains and legumes and root vegetables that get a lot of their flavor from long simmering times - and are much less expensive than other ingredients. A couple of thoughts:

- re: Bethany's comment, milk can easily be frozen. If using a glass jar be sure to leave plenty of head room (at least 2 inches) b/c frozen liquids expand and they need extra room so the glass doesn't shatter.
- when you roast your cornish hen, save the carcass and bones to make chicken stock! to my mind, this method of using pre-roasted bones makes a much richer, tastier broth than using uncooked chicken. if you're not ready to make stock the same day, freeze it until you're ready. with your stock you can make an infinite number of soups. i imagine the same is true for other kinds of meat bones as well.
- save all vegetable scraps (onion skins, the trimmed ends and peels of carrots, potatoes, turnips, etc) to use when making your chicken stock. again, if not ready to make stock the same day, keep well wrapped in freezer until ready to use.
- many shops and farmer's markets discount fresh produce at the end of the day b/c they don't want to wind up w. unsold perishable goods.
- as someone else said, bake bread!
- generally, buying dried beans and grains in bulk is much less expensive than buying cans (though 4 for $1 for canned lentils is is a great deal!).
- organizing some potluck meals w. friends could be a great way to eat different dishes - and if you host, you might have leftovers for the next day.

Good luck! Hopefully your loan will come through, but if not hope you wind up eating really yummy things and keep your tummy full til April!

You know, I bet your friends would love to help you and have a festive winter get together at the same time. Maybe a little food shower is just what everyones needs. People love parties and friends love to help. Let one your closest, closer, close friends know about this. And as for vegetables the frozen store-branded vegetables are always the cheapest, and then, do not forget the power of soup for the recycle.

School will be over soon, and a great future awaits you. Stick in there and let people help you do that.

I am evangelical about this recipe:

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Fagioli-Alluccelletto-10871

I estimate it costs about 50 cents per serving, requires only 5 ingredients, the prep is as easy as it gets... and it's ridiculously delicious. We make it almost every week in the winter.

And I second sweet potatoes and cabbage -- they're cheap, very nutritious, and last forever in the fridge.

Hello,

I have found that dry beans and rice are really good. If you soak the beans overnight then they only take about an hour to cook. Sweet Potatos are really good and cheap too. Vegetables that can run cheap are carrots, onions, cucumbers and tomotos, depending on where you live. Tuna is also a good basic staple and ramen noodles in the packets are cheap too. Pasta with a very basic homemade red or white sauce or jar on sale. Just a few ideas.... I hope you meet your goals!

If you were in the southern US I'd say go to a Hispanic grocery store or any other ethnic market. In terms of ordinary ingredients, cut back on dairy. If you do buy milk and you only use it for cooking though, buy a half gallon in a paper carton. The clear plastic jugs cause the milk to sour in about a week. I've had a half gallon of organic milk in a carton that doesn't expire for a month.

Wow.

Thanks so much. Halifax is a beauitful harbour city, but its cold in the winter and living on a tiny tiny budget seems especially daunting in this kind of weather.

This forum has already given me some great ideas. I just got back from the Asian grocery store near my apartment and managed to buy four cans of lentils for one dollar! There aren't even any additives in the can!

I also did inventory of my freezer and pantry last night and things are not as disheartening as I originally thought.

I have: fettucine, a small frozen cornish hen (bought back when I felt wealthier), pasta sauce, frozen soup broth, a pork roast, a salmon steak, two packs of frozen shrimp, frozen hamburger a frozen pizza, two boxes of coucous, four packs of herbal teas, lots of popcorn, three cans of kidney beans, two bars of dark chocolate, and a cupboard full of baking supplies and dried spices. All is not lost. I'm starting to feel like I can do this!

I'm going to go scour the stores for cheap chick peas for chili.

Your advice has really cheered me up. Thanks a million times over!

There's a great blog called "CheapHealthyGood" that I use all of the time--not just when I'm broke! I also find it helpful to stock up on onions, potatoes, carrots, and garlic as well as rice, canned beans and tomatoes so that you always have something ready to make a meal out of and aren't tempted to eat out and blow your budget.

My favorite inexpensive meals are:
-lentil soup (I make a lot of it, then I turn it into indian dal the second day, or maybe add some sausage or rice on the third day, etc.)
-black beans, rice & hot sauce (add an onion or bell pepper if you have it)
-quesadilla with whatever you have lying around (cheese, salsa, beans, chicken, veggies, etc.)
-potato soup (with or without ham/bacon)
-chili
-chickpea, feta, red onion, and pepper salad (hot or cold)
-buying a whole chicken and roasting it the first day, turning it into soup or chili the second, curry the third, and chicken salad sandwiches the fourth.
-making homemade pizza dough (Mark Bittman's recipe always works well for me). You can use leftover veggies/meats, canned or fresh tomatoes for sauce, and the dough freezes well. It's also a good excuse to invite friends over and have a pizza-making party!

Hope that helps!

hang in there, andie! i seem to remember reading some good pieces on miniscule food budgets back on apartment therapy but can't seem to locate them today.

one thing i think will help is planning for bigger stretches of time (not week by week). cook in big batches and freeze to take advantage of bulk prices for items like dried beans. buy unprocessed as much as possible (raw oats instead of packets of flavored oatmeal) and watch the circulars for the best deals.

Hi Andie!
What part of Canada are you from? I live in Toronto, so if need be I would be happy to show you some of my staple meals.

I left my job to become a full time artist and trust me the money is nonexistent for a long time.

Heres some of my nutritious staples that get me through

Breakfast: Oatmeal

snack: seasonal fruit (buy something in season or on sale)

Lunch: lentil soup (so cheap and you can make it in large batches and freeze, saute 2 onions with 4 cloves of garlic in some olive oil add approx 2 cups split lentils and approx 8 cups of water til lentils are nice and soft, blend)

homemade hummus: in a food processor blend 2 cans of rinsed and drained chickpeas with 2 cloves garlic, 1/4 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup vinegar. I eat it with sliced cucumber or rice crisps

dinner: veggie chili
brown 1 packet of ground soy meat with 2 onions and 3 cloves of chopped garlic, add 1 can tomatoes and 1 can tomato juice, some worchestirchire(sp?), chili powder, salt and cumin. simmer for 1 hour, then add I can of kidney beans.
freeze in batches.

Buy cabbage and kale, its very nutritionally dense and takes a long time to spoil so it will last.

Its totally possible! you said you have a stocked pantry, planning is key and always have a snack in your purse so youre never in a situation to buy anything.
I make homemade bread too, it saves so much money and its way more nutritious and tasty.
I would also suggest living off frozen fruit veggies too.

Go veg or vegan for the next 3 months too, it will slice your bill!!

Andie, Don't despair! I'm going to feature your question on Facebook and on the blog homepage and we'll get you some answers.

A friend of mine just recently had this exact same problem. She shopped at the dollar store (who knew they had groceries?) and bought sweet potatoes, lentils and rice. In fact, I think she relied heavily on this recipe with sweet potatoes in place of the squash and without the fancy toppings.

Another friend swears by the bulk section in Indian grocery stores: super cheap legumes and rice.

I'll come back here and post some more super cheapo recipes.

In the meantime, do look over at the Facebook thread. My economist friend has already posted some very good advice:

My name is Andie and I've been a lurker on Pink of Perfection for quite some time. That's a creepy thing to admit, but I've always been so nervous about putting myself out here.

Recently, I've been losing sleep over the fact that I've become (somewhat) heartbreakingly broke.

I was hoping that someone on this forum could help me out/offer some advice.

I'm a graduate student in Canada (library science) and my student loan application was just rejected. I've begun the appeal process, but I might need to pull five hundred dollars out of a hat to pay for the remainder of my semester.

I had put money aside to pay for my rent until April, and my work as a teacher's assistant will pay for my bills and should stretch far enough to cover that extra five hundred

After everything is said and done, I'll probably only have 160 dollars to spend on groceries between now and April.

Is it humanly possible to survive on that little money? Am I going to starve? I have a freezer full of meat and a pantry stuffed full of baking ingredients and spices, but will I have to go without produce/bagels/the occasional tasty chocolate treat for the next few months?

I was wondering if people could help me out by posting links to super cheap meals? Or if someone could tell me how I can stretch things out?

I'm really worried.
