Too Much Vacation

berenstain-bears-and-too-much-vacation

Oh heavens, am I ever happy to see you, Tuesday. You bring order, reason, and perhaps even a sense of proportion back into my life today. You’re a sight for sore eyes.

I had one of those weekends that starts as wonderfully indulgent––$1 oysters by night, chocolate croissants by day––but devolves into overindulgence. The kind of overindulgence that has you saying “Another round!” with too much exuberance, eating sausage egg biscuits from 7-11 at 1AM and waking up to a headache that makes you wish you were never born. With my allergy to moderation this weekend, I believe I made Mark Twain proud.

And so I am ready to become reacquainted with the whole grains in my cupboard and these green things called vegetables. I’m off to buy asparagus.

How was your weekend? Did you make delicious things? Did you drink eleventy-million beers, like me? Do you also have a problem making the fun stop once it gets going? Maybe it’s an Aries thing. Which reminds me: don’t forget to read your Astrologyzone!

  • Julia: I always have a problem making the fun stop! It goes for all of my many vices: shopping, eating, drinking, sunbathing…and then I always regret the consequences. Not the action, mind, oooh no I always enjoy the fun part! But not so much the back down to earth with a bump feeling that comes the next day.
Oh, and I am an Aries!
Happy Tuesday :) 1 year ago

  • Rebecca: Whenever I feel Too-Much-Vacation, I slow down and make this Green Soup with Ginger, from Anna Thomas’ cookbook, “Love Soup.” The soup is so healthy, you immediately start feeling back on track!

  • Julia, Girl, I hear you. Aries unite!

Rebecca, Yes, that sounds like the perfect antidote! Thanks for the link!1 year ago

  • DesigningDiva: Oh, my, there can NEVER be such a thing as too MUCH
vacation! My motto is that I absolutely LIVE for them! Even a day of relaxing or a staycation is enough sometimes for me to totally regroup. I am an Aries, too –
and a type A personality goes with that so I am a major
overachiever-type girl who is always doing, doing, doing….
but sometimes we just need to step back, slow down the pace, and enjoy the serenity! Enjoy some summer fruits
and veggies and you’ll feel right back on track! And don’t forget some healthy smoothies….1 year ago

  • Meghan: You make me chuckle! “Eleventy-million beers” = major ouch the next day. Putting the brakes on good times is a major downer, but it has to be done, at least if you want to keep your job and health. I try to ease my way back to balance–baby steps!1 year ago

  • Amy C: First off, love the berenstain bears! I had every book as a kid.

Second off, yes. Maybe it is an Aries thing, because I went a bit wild this holiday, too. Definitely a “this will be delicious with alcohol in it” sort of weekend. Also a “overload on meat anything” weekend.. I think my bloodstream is more burger and beer than anything else.
My penance today is whole wheat orecchiette with lentils and caramelized onions for dinner (not a bad punishment, eh??)1 year ago

  • Karen: I found myself home alone with the dog this past weekend. The family had various commitments and I was responsible for watching our sweet pooch!

Since I would be solo I decided a trip to Whole Foods was in order (I thought I would pamper myself with some nice meals). Although I may have sampled a bit too much, everything was “moderately” healthy and delicious. I think it was the lack of exercise that hurt the most!

Sarah, I made the Scallop Gratin you wrote about a few weeks ago (modified since I forgot the prosciutto). Fabulous and ever so indulgent!1 year ago

  • Rae: That ginger soup sounds like a good fix. The spice is the only thing that can cure what ails me after that eleventy-millionth beer.1 year ago

  • Christine S.: Sausage egg biscuits at 1 a.m. at the 7-11 reminds me of my 1-2 a.m. runs to IHOP to have biscuits with sausage and gravy while I was living in Texas…that was always fun to do after the revelry was over for the night.

However, I was good this weekend…not a drop to drink, a bit sunburned from the lengthy walks I took; however, trust me, a margharita would have really hit the spot! If only I could find Shiner up here!1 year ago

  • Ann: I love that you follow the church of Susan Miller as much as I do! :) 1 year ago

  • Sarah F: I spent the weekend preparing for a garage sale THIS weekend. So far we’ve expelled huge amounts from the garage and got the storage unit half-way cleaned out. It’s been an experience my father says we should enjoy since it will never be repeated.1 year ago

  • heather: right there with you, sister. though our boozy-tastic-ness took the form of wine. and the kinds of languorous meals that result from lots-o-wine…namely, the ones that end with, “mmm, that cupcake was GOOD! ooo, this apricot square is ALSO good! OOO, more wine!” (though we DID make rabbit this weekend! first time ever made-or-ate for both of us! and it was fantastic! we are v. chuffed.)

i ALSO made the scallop gratin…only mister heather does no love scallops (???), so i used beautiful, sweet halibut (i sliced fillets into, like, 3 ‘fingers’ each) from our butcher/fish monger (OH i love that we have one!). FABULOUS.1 year ago

  • tami: bourbon and beach day trip for me. i’m still exhausted!

i’m on the serious cusp of being an aries, so i’ve got go-get-ems too. it’s a constant practice to slow the hell down.1 year ago

  • lindsay: Your timing is perfect! I just returned from a Louisiana wedding, eleventy million and one beers, and more fried food than a mortal should consume. Wish I’d seen that soup recipe earlier! Greens and moderation are needed stat.1 year ago

  • evontameca: Aries… we’re so special. I over-indulged on the grilled burgers my brother so beautifully prepared. I had eleventy million deviled eggs, but it would’ve been nice to have a few wine coolers to accompany them.1 year ago

  • molly: oy, overindulgence bites back hard, sometimes! the only silver lining, i think, is it leaves you full of resolve and purpose. until next time :) i’m after a good overall average, myself :) hope your head’s feeling better!1 year ago

  • Ginger: I just saw these today and thought of you…

  • Ginger, I LOVE IT! :) 1 year ago

  • Collegian: I had the same thing last weekend because we had visitors in town. It was so much fun but I’ve spent this entire week trying to detox. Nothing makes me feel instantly healthier like kale :) 1 year ago

  • Sasa: I had elevnty million grappas at a an awesome wedding in Alto Adige in Italy, now my entire body aches as if beaten from all the dancing. Like 8 hours, literally. But happy :) 1 year ago

  • rhonda35: I’m a Taurus, but I think I should be an Aries! I can never, ever, ever put a stop to the fun when I should. I like to think this sort of behavior means people like us love life!1 year ago

  • Julia: A little postscript to this thread: During yet another sunny, overindulgent weekend I was chatting to my sister’s boyfriend (whose birthday is the day after mine) about my fiance being the ‘caring’ one of the group, often to be seen dishing out the sunscreen, painkillers etc. I remarked along the lines of ‘… and I’m usually the drunk, sunburned one’. Sister’s boyfriend replied, ‘yep, me too. Must be an Aries thing’.
I’m pretty sure he’s not a regular reader of PoP! (not that it isn’t great and all, just don’t think it’s his thing).1 year ago
