What constitutes “Scandinavian’ish’”? (And how should I punctuate that last sentence??)28 weeks ago
All good questions! I started looking at the fabrics of swedish designer josef frank the other night and wanted to cry because they were so beautiful and so astoundingly expensive. So I decided to look for fabrics that had similar whimsical, botanical prints. And then I ended up looking at a bunch of Marimekko fabrics…and there you have it, I guess.
I always thought the punctuation went inside the quote, but more and more, I’m not so sure. Any copy editors out there care to pipe up?28 weeks ago
deborah robertson: The placement of question marks with quotes follows logic. in this case the question mark should be placed inside the quotation marks.
2nd thing - a girlfriend & I are visiting to NYC 24 -28 Feb - can you recommend a special thrify, dolce vita place we should go? Thanks. We are from Bermuda so the 50 things to love about winter give me some thoughts! Thank you Sarah for all the wonderful posts - yours is a gifted site I visit ofen, Deborah xx28 weeks ago
Laureen: I’ve been thinking about this for awhile and this was a perfect excuse to pull out that reference book that’s been gathering dust on my desk. According to my friend, The AP Stylebook:
-The period and the comma always go within the quotation marks.
-The dash, the semicolon, the question mark and the exclamation point go within the quotation marks when they apply to the quoted matter only. They go outside when they apply to the whole sentence.
So, I would say the question mark should go outside the quotes on this one since you were quoting “Scandinavian(ish)” but the question applies to the whole sentence. Thoughts?28 weeks ago
Rebecca: It’s like you can READ MY MIND. I love those clean and cheerful Scandanavian fabrics, and someday hope to be rich enough to outfit my (for now imaginary) house in Marimekko fabrics. And now I have even more places to look at pretty patterns.
My mother is bewildered by this love; for her, Marimekko is just the 70s all over again..28 weeks ago
Rebecca: And I was so excited, I didn’t spell Scandinavian correctly… oops.28 weeks ago
Wow, I love all this geek talk. Based on Laureen’s book, I would think that the question mark belonged outside the quotation in Sarah F’s comment.
Deborah, What kind of thing are you and your friend looking for? A place to eat? drink? shop?
Rebecca, Creepy, isn’t it? I love, love, love these fabrics, too. Some of the Marimekko stuff is a little too 70’s for me, but I like the dreamier florals so much. And how cute are some of those Ikea fabrics? And cheap!28 weeks ago
Ruth @ GraceLaced: I must admit that at times I forget that there’s any fabric designers outside of the ever-popular ones here in the midwest (modern)! So…I’m sooo appreciating this dialogue about punctuation–it’s always perplexed me. So, does that mean, in my sentence about, the exclamation is indeed supposed to go outside of the parenthesis, and not within?28 weeks ago
Ruth, Of course I’m an Amy Butler fan, too! She’s the greatest. As for the punctuation, I think you did it correctly, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it!28 weeks ago
Anna: So funny, I just clicked over to check your blog and had just been looking at Josef Frank fabrics over on Svenskt Tenn. I agree, sooo gorgeous! I love all of his designs. Wouldn’t the Italian Dinner fabric be great for little pillows or napkins or some other sort of accent for the kitchen?
I would love something of his for my little boy’s room, too. Thank goodness the grad school days are drawing to a close and I can actually (I hope) think of buying a little of his stuff.
Did you see the shoot Domino did at the home of Carina (?), owner of Nonchalant Mom? She had framed a panel of one of my favorite of J Frank’s fabrics to really beautiful effect.
Anyway, great finds of similar fabrics on your part!28 weeks ago
Anna: Please forgive my crazy computer if my comment tried to post more than once! I’m rethinking my love for Apple…28 weeks ago
Anna, I don’t remember that feature from Domino — I bet it was gorgeous. I personally love the La Plata fabric that’s blue and white. It’s such an investment, but one of those things that if you really, really love could bring such beauty to your house for a lifetime. At least, that’s my rationalization for such a purchase! I’m going to do a search for that Domino feature and see if I can find some photos still living on some blogs… Thanks!28 weeks ago
Karen: When I scrolled over the fabric “swatches” above, the fredrika one caught my eye first. Blues and greens get my attention….. although all of them are lovely!28 weeks ago
Allison Conley: I love this thread of conversation!28 weeks ago
Anna, I did! Gorgeous. I love that gallery display of photos in the room with the Josef Frank wall hanging.
Karen, Blues and greens have such a dreamy, relaxing quality. I love that bottna green one too.
Mom, I knew you would love the fabrics, too!28 weeks ago
Christine H.: These make me happy. I have a bit of the first pattern (fabric swirl) that I have stashed away waiting for the “perfect” small project. It’s so soft & pretty. And suddenly I have the urge to buy more fabric. 28 weeks ago
Kate: What a delight, the fabric of my ancestry plus a spin off convo about punctuation. My two favourite things to discuss. Surely you know about Eats, Shoots & Leaves? Thanks for the dose of pretty!27 weeks ago

Anna: Hi Sarah,

And completely agree with you - - it would be a worthy investment!28 weeks ago
