  • Sara Rose: You just inspired me to get out of my funk RIGHT.NOW. I think I’ll steal this idea and do my own blog. Thank you love!34 weeks ago

  • Christine S.: Snow…yes, love it! Even if it means cold weather is attached to it!

January holds such promise for all good things in the new year and a whole new 12 mos. to pursue them!

January is also the midpt. of the school year! Halfway done!!!!34 weeks ago

  • Megan: 1) The Wire is the best show on television — the boy and I are now on Season 4 and could not be more addicted. It is taking a major toll on my resolution to play guitar more this year…

    2) Additional thing I am excited for this year: looseleaf tea. Lots of it. We just got a kettle and tea ball and so far, both have been treating us dandily.34 weeks ago

  • Sara Rose, Nothing like a list of a few pleasures and things to look forward to to get you out of a funk. Also, if you need some adult programming in your life, I am seriously into The Wire. It’s gritty and horrifying, but so well done, and — maybe this is horrible to say — makes you SO grateful to not be a heroine addict. Count that as one major problem you don’t have!

Christine S, I am so loving the snow. I decided this year that I love snow better than Christmas. :)

Megan, Yes — The Wire! I resisted for a long time because it seemed like a messy, dark world I didn’t want to get into, but now I’m totally hooked!34 weeks ago

  • Stephanie: Definitely stoked about 1) Recognizing Sarah at the bar on New Year’s Eve, making a tipsy approach, and finding out she’s totally social and gracious! 2) Persistent cooking with brussels sprouts and cheese 3) Cashing that Christmas check 4) Being in the middle of Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel 5) The surprised “Thanks!” emails faraway friends send when they finally receive your snail-mail Xmas cards 6) Colum McCann at the Happy Ending Reading Series “America Night” tomorrow 7) Messy drinking at Swift after Happy Ending ends 8) Learning to sail…34 weeks ago

  • Stephanie, I’m so glad you wrote! It was such a delight to meet you and on such a festive occasion! The Happy Ending Reading Series sounds so great, and learning to sail sounds ever so dreamy (if very, very cold). Must also remind you of my favorite brussels sprouts recipe.34 weeks ago

  • academicsocialite: Sarah - are you serious on following the Action Plan challenge? I attempted the detox over the weekend and caved after the first day (too many tempting post-holiday treats still in the apartment). I plan to try again though the caffeine headache is bound to be no fun.34 weeks ago

  • Gina: this is a good post, because it really made me stop and think for a minute. So far January has presented me primarily with challenges, so I’ve been a bit testy the past few days.

However, to look on the bright side, I am grateful to have a cozy tea date with a friend today, and that I have parents who look out for me still (even though they really shouldn’t have to anymore), and for leftover christmas treats, and a collection of books and dvds to make my way through. Oh, and my big wam duvet!

So thanks for making me realize all of this.34 weeks ago

  • academicsocialite, i got confused over when the detox started and began yesterday. the caffeine headache is NO JOKE. last night i felt like i had a cleaver in my head. but otherwise, it’s fine. it doesn’t hurt that i’ve been sick anyway so my energy was pretty much in the dumps.

Gina, Oooh, a tea date with a friend sounds pretty darn marvelous to me right about now. My bestie has been out of town, so that’s another thing I’m happy about — her return. If I were you and feeling testy, I would take those leftover treats, the book and dvd collection, and climb right under that warm duvet tonight!34 weeks ago

  • Sara Rose: Never mind. I was going to try to do a list. Then life fell apart today. I don’t even know where to start.34 weeks ago

  • Avril: Thank you. I needed this. 2010 has started out in a funk for me too. I feel like the dreamer in me is dead. I need to do a gratitude list…NOW! Thanks again for this post…it made me feel better :) 34 weeks ago

  • Amy C: Ok, seriously…had no idea about the meditation oasis. I went to itunes and have been listening to their guided meditations…LOVE them. I spent yesterday in peace because of the “let it be” meditation.34 weeks ago

  • Amy C: Oh, also, I did the Wholeliving detox last year…actually, I should replace “did” with “tried”. I found out the hard way that I am hypoglycemic, and need tons of protein…veggies and rice for a week straight was not cutting it. But I did do the dry brushing, and baths, and all of that, an it was just marvy… :) 34 weeks ago

  • Lesley: Thank you for this! Watching The Wire is a great way to start out 2010. My husband and I watched all five seasons last year, and it’s unforgettable. Just be sure to have a another show ready when you’re done, because you start going through withdrawals…

My list of what I’m happy about in January:

    1. Having the strength to tackle a big writing project
    2. Two instances so far this month in which I’ve put myself first, for the first time in a long time
    3. The crunchy exterior on homemade scones, and a warm oven to heat the freezing house in the morning
    4. A pink-and-red scarf I bought at Old Navy last year as an impulse buy, but I wear it almost every day
    5. My trip to India in two weeks

Here’s to more things to be grateful for in February!34 weeks ago

  • Avril: Lesley….Im grateful too for a new writing project! :) Just closed a new deal today, that pushed my spirits straight up. And oh, enjoy India…I live here, and you’re in for the time of your life! (Cheers from Mumbai!)34 weeks ago

  • Megan: A fab brussels sprouts recipe for those looking for one:

In a large saucepan, heat olive oil with onions so they both coat the bottom of the pan. Add chopped brussels sprouts and green apple, plus a little vinegar of some sort (red wine, sherry, any will do), and chopped walnuts. When the apples and b.sprouts are soft, and you can smell the walnuts roasting, sprinkle blue cheese on and stir. DELISH.

[as you can tell, i am not one for measurements...]34 weeks ago

  • Katharine: I’m excited for… training for and running in my first 5K, seeing where my new blogging adventure takes me, meeting wonderful bloggies in this giant blogosphere, and visiting friends in distant cities.34 weeks ago

  • EB: You are good for these uplifting- look at things in a new way- posts.

I’m excited for my new job and the new people I will meet because of it.
I’m excited for the ‘clean slate’ feeling January brings
I’m excited for all that will be coming with spring.

    :) Thanks darling girl!

  • Evon T.: I’m happy about:

Drinking green tea with a splash of orange juice while reading craft and decorating magazines in my new house, beginning to eat lots of lima beans with dinner like I used to as a kid, lower electric bills in the winter, lounging around watching cable on a full belly, the fact that one of my favorite instructors befriended me on facebook, going to Home Goods any day of the week with coffee in-hand, this wonderful blog (Thanks Sarah), and for visions of new cross stitch projects to prepare for. XOXO ladies.33 weeks ago
