Kokie: I would love this book! It looks like a ton of fun! Thanks for sharing it!1 year ago
Lilly: The dress I love to wear the most is a zebra-print faux wrap dress. The combination of its body-flattering cut, its power to make my husband drool, and the exotic print make me feel amazing!1 year ago
beth: ah, dresses. i went to a birthday dance party last night where probably 95% of the girls were in amazing summery dresses — it was great to see everyone so prettied up! my current favorite is a hot pink cotton sundress i bought at a vintage store with thin white vertical stripes that go down to the waist then turn and head diagonally down the skirt. it’s super comfortable with a cool pattern, and the only thing keeping it from being absolutely perfect is a lack of pockets. dresses with pockets are the best.1 year ago
Zannah: I’ve got this knit dress with an empire waist that makes me look fabulous even though it’s as comfortable as a nightgown. LOVE it, although really, I just love dresses in general. Terrific giveaway - thanks!1 year ago
Pomona: It’s not very original, but my favourite dress ever was my wedding dress - palest pink wild silk, and my one and only chance to be princess for a day! And how sad - 22 years on, there’s never been a dress to match it, sob!! Maybe I need some misguidance!

B.: Last month, my sister bought a hot pink and yellow paisley print maxi dress with a brown crocheted halter top. That evening, after weeks of studying and no make up, I put it on, dyed my hair, and applied make up. My boyfriend was late coming over and he was so happy and excited after a long day’s work because I looked so pretty and it changed his disappointed mood after job hunting and work.1 year ago
Kristen: My favorite dresses are the ones I’ve made then gotten a complement from someone who didn’t know I made it myself.1 year ago
Adrienne: I have a bright blue knit dress with sleeves and a turquoise green leaf pattern that I wear to fall weddings (with red shoes!) that always makes me feel amaaazing.1 year ago
Erica: I have a sundress with red and pink flowers on it that I wore for my college graduation. It has a lot of sentimental value to me!1 year ago
Steffie: That looks like a fun one… Also, very awesome landing a give away book for your readers! Thanks!
Favorite dress, hm…. Easy, the vintage inspired black and while polka dot dress hanging in my closet now. It looks like something from the fifties, perhaps, with a bit of lace up arcanistry in the back to make it fit my figure, some boning for support and a perfect flare just at the knees, flattering my calves a lot. I love it because I can wear heels or flats and look good. And the dot pattern is small enough not to be too bold, but good enough to slim just right. Picnic wear to semi-formal definitely. I feel like I should wear a string of pearls with it! Always lifts my mood.1 year ago
Merva: I have a summer cotton dress that is lime green. I call it my Kermit dress and against my red hair I feel like a million bucks. It’s comfortable, original and what’s more, I feel really good in it. Did I mention I’ve been wearing it for about fifteen years?1 year ago
ChristyG: This summer my fave dress has been a black and white print sundress that fits like a glove and makes me feel totally girly! I wear it to work with a pair of red peep toe pumps and red bakelite bracelet. No matter what I feel like before, I put it on and feel completely feminine! Tres Chic!1 year ago
Tiffany: Oh fun!
For anyone in the SF area, she’ll be at the Candy Store Collective in the Mission tonight (7/13) signing books too!1 year ago
Meg: I loved the dress I wore for my friend Louisa’s wedding. Floor length, a bit of a train, red satin - it was the most va-va-va-voom I’ve ever felt!1 year ago
Amanda: What can I say? I’m a sucker for a great LBD. My latest one has an empire waist and the kind of skirt that makes you just want to twirl in circles just to see the fabric float around you.1 year ago
Ellen: I had a floaty deep blue, knee-length dress that I wore to a college party & in which, I felt like a princess.1 year ago
Kristina: My favorite: An eggplant-purple empire-waisted dress that sweeps the floor which I bought in Athens. I’m not sure if it’s just the dress, or partly the exotic location where I bought it, that makes me love it.1 year ago
Forrest: My favorite dress of all time is my “opera” dress (only worn it to the opera twice though…) Black satin, knee length, strapless, fits like a glove with flowers embroidered on the bodice. I feel like a 40’s movie star in it…1 year ago
Christine S.: Dresses mark milestones in my life! I remember this cute little polo-colored pink and green tennis dress that I wore from the ages of 4-5…would make my mom take tons of pictures of me wearing it. My 1st communion dress made me feel like a white princess! Then, the white lace number I wore to my prom was my 2nd time to feel the same way!
Since then, I’d say this great “Coco” red flirty, flamenco-y dress I’ve worn out to tapas bars where Spanish music is playing…makes me feel exotic and as if I’ve been transported to Europe! It generally speaking is a “man magnet” type of dress…cut just so, slightly wrapped, and ruffly-flirty in all the right places!
Amazing how a dress can do all that for one’s psyche and spirit!1 year ago
Kelly: One of my favorites: for my high school graduation party, I wore a short ocean-blue strapless dress. In it I felt, for the first time, like I was finally growing up. Ah, and that was nine years ago. I’m not sure that I’m all grown up yet, but i do remember the wonderful feeling that the dress gave me.1 year ago
Linda: A dress I’ve worn and loved often is a basic black shift! can’t beat it!1 year ago
Karen: I have a periwinkle and white polka dot a-line dress that I love to wear in summer. It is very comfortable!1 year ago
Anna: My favorite dress is a green, just-below-the knee Les Prairies de Paris strapless with a gorgeous Japanese-inspired white print, and wooden beads at the gathered bust ending in a little gold tassel. I’ve had it for four years now, and it looks fresh and new every summer when I pull it out. I would never expect a little printed number like this to stand the test of time better than some of my solid, plainer dresses, but it has!1 year ago
piper jacquelyn: I am so glad you are doing this! I remember seeing this book before, but could not for the life of me remember what it was. I hope to win!! My fave dress I wore was this hilarious kimono-style thing with birds on it. It was too funny for words, but quite pretty at the same time!1 year ago
Loquin: My favorite dress I call “the naked dress” a la Sex in the City - although I have it in two different colors and one of them is blue! You see the thing is, when I bought the dress (and later the blue version) I couldn’t yet fit into it but I knew I would be shrinking. I’ve lost 55 lbs so far and the naked dress fits perfectly!!1 year ago
Stephanie: i bought my two favorite dresses while I was in Barcelona in 2007. One is red with beautiful beading and the other is a floral wrap dress…I still wear them…and always get compliments on them.1 year ago
Elizabeth: A favorite dress: my white strapless a-line dress with big black flowers stenciled along the hem in an asymeterical pattern. With a black clutch and pair of big sunglasses, when I wear it I feel as stylish as a modern day Jackie O. Nothing like the feeling of wearing a favorite dress.1 year ago
sarah: i bought a DVF black dress off ebay on the cheap… I wore it all through my college years, it’s versatility was incredible. A few times I even modified it so I could wear it only as a blouse with jeans… Its still one of my favorite things in my closet1 year ago
Alyson: My sister and I both bought the same dress 3 years ago: a red print wrap dress with white piping, puffy cap sleeves and pearl buttons, very Annie Oakley. She wore hers with boots, or over jeans, or with heels, and with a cardigan and I stood in front of my wardrobe and looked mine alot.. I cut it in half last week much to both of our surprise and I wear it as a top almost every day now. It’s still my favorite dress.

Emma: Favorite dress was the Collette Dinnigan-designed dress found at a vintage-clothing store that I wore as my sister’s maid of honor. Pale celadon green silk strapless knee-length dress with large twining flowers embroidered in thick cream-colored silk. Perfect fit, no tugging at the top, and, best of all, when the sun went down we discovered that the embroidered flowers were made from some glow-in-the-dark-thread–literally! Was a little strange, but very cool.1 year ago
Trude: That looks lovely! One of the first “major” dresses I wore was for junior prom in high school. It was a black satin Jackie O-style sheath dress that fit me like a glove from Max Studio before they went all hippie.
My date wore a zoot suit in black and white. This was in 2000, so needless to say we stood out a bit at the dance!
Thanks for doing this!1 year ago
Emily C.: Oh, I have so many! But my current favorite (perhaps because I just bought it) is a black silk one–I’ve never had a LBD that I liked and that didn’t seem funereal, and this one is a beautiful sleeveless shift with a full pleated skirt that looks like it’s from the fifties; those style dresses *never* fit me because they’re too small in the chest, and this one fits beautifully. Plus it was only $15! I’m quite enamored.1 year ago
Jessica: In second grade, I had a black dress with hot pink trim around the neck and tips of my sleeves. Four, glittery shapes covered the front. Of course, I wore it for school pictures, and about every other day my mom would let me. I would come home with glitter all about, having touched my dress, then my nose, then my hair. It makes me happy, even now.1 year ago
Emily: My favourite dress ever was a sundress my Grandma made for me when I was 6 or 7. As she came from a generation of women who had learnt to do everything by hand, she sewed the whole thing herself and I remember sitting on her couch one summer and watching her form tiny, perfect stitches. It was black with huge print flowers and when I think of summer I think of sitting on the couch and watching her sew, whilst sipping cold tea.1 year ago
Mari: As I independent designer, you’d think I’d love something outrageously “Carrie” or haute couture-ish…which, mind you, have a place in my heart of course. However, one of my favorite pieces that calls my name every time I open my closet is a simple charcoal sweater dress with a sheer cap sleeve inset & sweetheart neck. If it wasn’t 99 degree’s in LA I’d wear it every chance I get. It’s simplicity & comfort make it easy to be me & not think about what I’m wearing. I feel feminine & happy whenever I’m wearing it. I doubt I’ll ever throw it out, even if I can only wear it 4months out of the year!1 year ago
Katie: I absolutely love wearing dresses! One favorite is one I rarely wear. It’s a body skimming, knee length black silk Chinese style dress with a pattern of tiny cranes and piping in gold, a mandarin collar, and brass buttons across one shoulder. Not only does it make me feel kind of exotic wearing it, but it was a vintage find that a favorite aunt passed down to me when I was a teenager.1 year ago
Magycmyste: Mmmm…… my favorite dress at the moment is one I bought on eBay earlier this year. It’s a black mesh over burgandy lining, with lace and mini-rose details on the empire waist, and burgandy ribbon trim on the sleeves and near the hem. And the back is longer than the front, so I feel like I have a train when I’m wearing it (the front is knee-length, and the back reaches mid-calves. It showed up in the mail the day of my birthday, so I wore it to dinner and a movie with friends that night!1 year ago
Angela Zito: i have a fondness for a cheap yellow halter dress with a fruit pattern that my mom wore in the sixties
1 year ago
Cordelia: I borrowed a short–and quite tight–dress from a friend for a party. It was covered in turquoise, silver, and burgundy sequins. Totally brilliant.1 year ago
Kelly: My 30th birthday present to myself was a really great dress, one that would usher me into my 30’s with style and decent sense of self. I took the day off work, went to Anthropologie, and was determined to find something marvelous. I opted for a black dress with a ruffled bodice and eyelet embroidery on the skirt. It was a perfect outfit for a night of french dining in Berkeley (my best birthday yet!).1 year ago
Suzy: Oh, Lordy! I have loved Kat McLeod’s illustrations for YEARS now. I keep saving back issues of Real Simple magazine that feature her divine work! And what a perfectly appropriate giveaway for this blog!
As for the dress: I loved this easy, airy shift dress I bought the summer of 2000. It was made of a semi-sheer purple paisley fabric and I never bothered to wear a slip under it. (I swear you could only discern my underthings in very bright, direct light. i.e. sunlight–just kidding.) I wore it for my first date with my now husband. (Wonder if its sheerness had anything to do it…) I haven’t worn the dress in years but will probably never part with it.1 year ago
Brooke: Five years ago, I spent what felt like a lot of money at the time on a fifties-style halter dress with a collar and a full skirt. It’s a bold black and white floral pattern and a cool summer cotton. I was nervous when I bought it that I wouldn’t have anywhere to wear it. Then I realized that I could — and should — wear it anywhere! When I switch my (limited) closet space over from winter to summer, that’s the dress that always makes me smile.1 year ago
Megs: my favourite dress was one I had when I was thirteen. It had a crocheted top with an empire waist and a broomstick wrinkle skirt and…all tie-dyed! I loved it. When I spotted it in a local store, I saved up my babysitting money to buy. I wore it nonstop for two years. In fact, 15 years later it is still in my closet (for nostalgia - don’t know if I could pull it off anymore).1 year ago
Cassandra: My favorite dress right now is a hot pink halter style dress I found at a second hand shop. I love it.1 year ago
Maria Stuart: I’ve worn a lot of dresses in my life — some more memorable than others.
Just yesterday I was trying on a dress for a special occasion and my husband very definitely did not like it (so much for rockin’ the maxi!) A few minutes later I had on an everyday little number I bought at Target and he said “now that dress looks hot on you!” (Thanks Target and $24.99 — gotta love it!) .
However, one of the most memorable dresses of my life was a less than fabulous one that I wore to be Maid of Honor in my brother’s wedding. Cheap purple satin. Made by a very nice woman, could she help it if the fabric was ugly?
I hate to say but the vain young woman I was cried when I looked in the mirror when I tried it on at the final fitting. My sweet brother noticed and said “It’s okay honey, you look beautiful in that dress!” More than 20 years later he is still married to the bride who picked out that fabric. He must be right about a thing or two?1 year ago
Fiona: Ah, my favourite dress would have to be my black jersey dress with a ruched cinched in waist. It’s magic, it looks amazing and sexy but is also the comfiest dress ever.1 year ago
Jennifer: I have my fondest dress memories of my wedding dress. I only wore it for a few hours, but it was magical.1 year ago
kirstyfish: SO MANY!!! but - a dress from childhood. A dress given to me by my Nanna who bought it on travels in India. I was about 9yrs old. I wore it to a party and all the other children TAUNTED me and made jokes as it was so different. I did not care!!! i loved it and i have never ever forgotten that amazing dress x x1 year ago
Wendy Bussell: My mothers wedding dress. She was married in1959, the dress was tea length, black-grey-white-with small flowers and rhinestones. It was FABULOUS! She let my sister and I wear it on special occasions, before it gave out from all our love.1 year ago
Mandi: I have only had 2 dresses in my life thus far, that I remember. My prom dress and dress from being in my best friends wedding. I have to say they both made me feel amazing! I still have both. One is a black and white strapless gown with diamond accents. Very formal and elegant. The other is a black and red spaghetti strap latin type dress. It has the tapered bottom going from above the knee down to mid calf with slight ruffles. Very fun and sexy. Every now and then I will put them on just to make sure they still fit!
Good times!1 year ago
caitcat: Yes please… I would love the inspiratioN!1 year ago
Anna: i bought an orange dress this summer, strapless, jersey fabric, that is adorable. it has straps around the waist, which turn into a lovely droopy bow in the back. i love summer dresses!1 year ago
Carole: Of my favorite dresses is the one I wore when I got my PhD. It’s a summer sleeveless number with a wallpaper print of blue and darker blue flowers and a crinoline under-skirt. Words do not do justice…1 year ago
Sophie: Oohh, i love kat mccloud.
I love my 1940’s rayon day dress. For some reason any casual print dress from that era is always cut to perfection and has the softest, most flattering fabric. There’s nothing more chic and appealing, to me, the go-to “throw it on and feel like LIz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” dress. I also like imaging how the first owner might’ve worn it.
Mine is navy with white, feathery floral print.1 year ago
Sharon: The dress i loved to wear was a low waisted sort of flapperish looking thing in an unusual deep blue with ivory blooms. It was an early (1980’s) Nicole Miller. the skirt part was pleated … i hid my lack of waist and looked great on me if i do say so myself/.1 year ago
Anne Catherine: I was 19, hitting the Salvation Army, and found a classic 1950’s shift in a polyester print (looked like amoeba swimming through a sea of colorful jellybeans). At home, while my new dress smelled like an attic it was beautifully cut, hitting at the exact right spot on my chubby knees to make them look less dimpled and to lengthen my calves. The perfectly stitched darts set my breasts at perky attentiona. I felt sleek, sophisticated but still a little ironic. It lasted three years, and then it was ripped from neck to armhole when I was lipsynching to ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Lights”. Meatloaf had that effect on me. Loved that dress. Miss it still.1 year ago
Pam: Last year I was asked to MC the wedding reception of two very dear friends. Right away I knew I needed to look great at this wedding, as all eyes would be on me for at least part of the reception program. I searched high and low for the perfect dress to wear. I browsed online and even considered a custom made dress by my mother’s seamstress friend.
Then one afternoon, on a shopping mission with my husband, I spotted the dress across the mall hallway. I went inside and looked more closely. The colour and cut caught my eye immediately, so I found my size and rushed to the fitting room. It fit like a dream! It made my “fluffy” areas look slim and trim and my boobs looked amazing! The best part - it was reduced to clear and I only paid $50 for it!
At the wedding, old friends and strangers kept complimenting my dress. It was the first and only time that has ever happened to me. I felt so confident and beautiful!1 year ago
Claire Benjamin: Hope I win! Fingers crossed!
I wore an amazing dress to prom sophomore year that I got off the rack at one of those cheaper “junior” stores in the mall. I think it was maybe $30. Anyway, it was cut perfect and had embroidered flowers on the black satin bodice. Totally not my style now… but at the time, that night I felt it was the prettiest I’d ever looked haha!
On a side note: I danced with my future husband for the first time that night. We started dating a couple weeks later.1 year ago
Amanda: I love wearing dresses, but mainly summery casual dresses. Whenever I need a dress for a wedding or event I raid my housemates closet - she is a fashion major! This last weekend I borrowed a vintage dress - thrift store find. It is polyester like, navy blue, with a print of little white braes all over it. It’s low cut in the front, with big sleeves, not poofy, just flowy. It tight right under the chest and flows out to just above knee length. It’s VERY comfortable. SOUNDS STRANGE - but it is great! I felt really good in it. And unique.1 year ago
Lauren: My best friend and I bought matching dresses when we were 13… I’m 21 now and the dress finally fits!1 year ago
Beth: Well, this is cheesy, but I’m getting married in 11 days so what the hell. I’m looking forward to wearing my wedding dress… lace, simple, with a sweetheart neckline and tiny sweep train. so soon!1 year ago
Sylvia: While my parents were preparing to move to a new place some years ago, I was helping my mom clean out her closet and fell in love with a gorgeous YSL Rive Gauche dress I’d never seen before. My dad bought it for her in the late ’70s. It’s a crinkly ruched cotton fabric, off-the-shoulder and fitted through the body with a short asymmetrical train, dark orange and printed with a sort of riff on blue and purple paisley. Absolutely gorgeous, love at first sight. My mom said she’d probably never wear it again and gave it to me! I’m still waiting for the right occasion to rock it, but I’ll occasionally sneak it on and waltz around my bedroom for a bit. True frock love for sure.1 year ago
Tricia Chaves: I just bought a white drop waist dress with green flowers on it for the summertime. I’ve gone from a size 16 to an 8 in 2 years and was so happy because I finally feel like a ’skinny girl’ again in more than 10 years.

Anna G: I am currently all about a blue and white dress I recently picked up. It was a quick decision to purchase it (something that never happens, I am just too picky) and I am so glad that I did. It has been great for various summer functions.1 year ago
Kelsey: I wore and loved my senior year prom dress. Purple and sparkly and 5 dollars from a thrift store in Florida. It nipped in at the waist and really was lovely, but my favorite part was bragging to all my friends about how little it cost.1 year ago
Kendall: I have always been a thrifty shopper. When in high school I was responsible for any prom expenses since dances weren’t high on my parent’s priority list. I remember finding a very basic black tube dress at the mall. I dressed it up with some beautiful beaded jewelry using some of the money I saved on the dress. I remember looking at the pictures and thinking that I looked like the lead singer of some rediculously hip rock band. Compared to all the huge sequined (or barely there sequined) dresses, I felt classier than all of my friends who arrived in limos.
I gave that dress away a few years ago but I still wear the jewelry.

samantha: my favorite dress is from when i was six. it was purple and if you go through my family photo albums, the full of my sixth and seventh year is decorated with that little number. it got shorter and shorter on my knees. when mom finally threw it out, i pitched such a fit that i huffed off to my room for a few days and refused to come out. she said i really did a number on all my little piggly wiggly magazines.1 year ago
Lisette: I really want this book!!
A dress I’ve worn and loved is this simple green dress I bought recently. It’s so very pretty!1 year ago
rachael: I have a teal blue retro vintage dress with a giant bow at the neck. One year for halloween I had no costume, I was sad. But then I put on the dress, pouffed my hair, grabbed a bottle of tums antacids and wrote ‘uppers’ in sharpie marker…it was my best last minute costume:
“disgruntled 50’s housewife”
