In Honor of National Poetry Month…and a Birthday

birthday-cupcakes

A Newborn Girl at Passover
by Nan Cohen

Consider one apricot in a basket of them.
It is very much like all the other apricots–
an individual already, skin and seed.

Now think of this day. One you will probably forget.
The next breath you take, a long drink of air.
Holiday or not, it doesn’t matter.

A child is born and doesn’t know what day it is.
The particular joy in my heart she cannot imagine.
The taste of apricots is in store for her.

Happy spring weekend everyone! Here’s hoping it contains ripe apricots and cupcakes, both.

  • Those are cupcakes with butterscotch icing from an article the Lee Bros. had in O at Home (now defunct). Thank you for all the birthday wishes! Everyone should have a cupcake today! I’m about to make myself an orange and chocolate bday cake, which I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about soon… :) 2 years ago

  • Naomi: Happy Birthday Sarah,
We have a great tradition with birthdays. We get to do whatever we want on someone else’s birthday that we love because they would want us to!! To celebrate your birthday, I am going window shopping with my new beau down by Lake Ontario where all sorts of cute and fun shops are including a dignified “adult” store called Birds and Bees.
Thanks for being born Sarah.2 years ago

  • Sarah: PBG, Cannot wait to see you!

Ann and Cordelia, Thank you so much for the birthday wishes.

Naomi, I would DEFINITELY want you to enjoy my birthday that way. :) 2 years ago
