Hello! Lucky Holiday Cards Make Me Want to Deck the Halls

hello-lucky-cross-stitch.jpg

I have kind of a cozy fetish, which we’ve discussed here before, but which continues to motivate many of the decisions in my life. Like, for instance, my insatiable appetite for period dramas about small English towns and novels about the Dakotas in winter. Basically, if the characters are largely relying on horse-drawn carriages, candlelight, and the goodwill of neighbors, I’ll probably like it. Particularly if there are a lot of kitchen scenes.

This cozy fetish is also why I love, love, love these holiday cards from Hello! Lucky. The letterpressed card fashioned after cross-stitch up top first caught my eye, but I am equally in love with the folk art-style woodland creatures above. Perhaps even more so.

Add to all this that I am nursing a crush on the couple behind Lab Partners, who designed the ring-a-ding-ding! style cards above with yet more cozy town scenes in winter, and well, you can pretty much see that I am a holiday goner.

Do you mail holiday cards every year? Is it something you always mean to do but don’t quite follow-through on (paging Miss McColl)? Are they another stressor on the “should-do” to-do list this time of year, or something you look forward to?

    Haha I love that!

I like sending Xmas cards because I used to do a lot of letter-writing/penpal type stuff. I miss that, so I like the sometimes cumbersome process of it, specifically because it forces you to slow down.

I am planning on buying these cards from Fred Flare: http://fredflare.com/customer/product.php?productid=1738&cat=4 They fit in well with my Etsy stuff!1 year ago

  • sarah: Oh, those are so sweet, Alicia. Also, if you have any book/movie recommendations that fit withing those qualifications of mine you mentioned, please, pass them on!1 year ago

  • Brenda Colleen Leyland: Hey Cozy-Girl…. So ‘cozy’ does it for you, too? For years cozy has been my favorite word in the whole world.

I love cozy corners, cozy stories, cozy kitchens, cozy blankies, cozy cats, cozy snuggles, cozy coffee cafes, cozy second-hand book shops….

You ask if we send out cards at Christmas…. absolutely! I enjoy looking for the perfect theme I want to send on a particular year. And I really enjoy writing notes and letters to include, addressing the envelopes and applying festive stickers in the corners. There’s something really satisfying about watching the completed pile grow.

To me, writing out Christmas cards with festive music on in the background and desk lamps casting warm light is one of the most COZY traditions!1 year ago

  • Karen: Oh my goodness, a “cozy fetish”…I love that. I definitely have a love for all things cozy, too. Give me chilly nights under warm blankets, hot cups of cocoa, firelight and friends and I’ll be happy :) 1 year ago

  • DD: How do you find this stuff? Those are exactly what I’m always looking for and can never articulate or find. Thank you! You had me at “cozy”…1 year ago

  • sarah: These I actually saw at a local card shop and was instantly in love!1 year ago

  • Kristina: I make my own cards, usually just from bits of things leftover in my craft room. The designs vary, but cute holiday stamps from the post office are a must!1 year ago

  • Suzy: I’ve been sending Christmas cards for a few years. I love sending and receiving tangible correspondence, I have a stationery-buying addiction, and it gives me a reason to break out the calligraphy pen. Last year I decided to write one of those dreaded holiday letters to enclose with the cards. Only self-deprecating, not braggy and obnoxious. People said they really enjoyed them. This was a really tumultuous year for me, so despite my witty/look-on-the-bright-side slant, recipients of the 2008 letter will likely think more of their own lives once they read about mine! Just my little act of community service…(Ha.)1 year ago

  • Jenna: I always look forward to designing and sending out Christmas cards, my boyfriend (he’s an art director) and I (a graphic designer) design one each year and get about 40 or 50 printed. I’ve lived overseas for the last seven years, so I think it’s especially nice to let people know you’re thinking of them even though you can’t be close to them over the holidays. I still haven’t gotten up the nerve to send those Christmas letters, I think maybe that will come with kids…1 year ago

  • Sarah: Kristina, Homemade cards are the best, in my opinion. I can just never get mine to look that good. ;)
suzy, i hear you: 2008 is totally fired! i can’t wait to just get the rest of it over with and turn the page to a new chapter.

jenna, graphic designer + art director must = some pretty amazing cards.1 year ago

  • geek+nerd: Hi Sarah - this post inspired such a novel of a comment that I decided to turn it into a blog post instead:

  • Laureen: Did anyone get to see “Lost in Austen,” the BBC series about a modern girl who discovers a portal to the world of “Pride and Prejudice?” You sort of have to watch it on one of those semi-illegal free websites but I’m obsessed!

As for cards, I just got a box of paperedtogether’s (on Etsy) Silent Night: http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.45886286.jpg

Is it terrible if I want to keep them all for myself?1 year ago

  • sarah: Laureen, Did you see it (Lost in Austen)? I wonder if it was good — those BBC productions are usually awesome. And I totally understand your desire to keep all the cards to yourself. I’m the same way. ;) 1 year ago

  • Laureen: I was able to see it and I loved it.

At first someone fabulous in the UK was uploading video to youtube but then it got taken down. I had to watch the rest on http://www.free-tv-video-online.info

I’m not really sure about how legal that website is though….1 year ago

  • love, gidget: i loves sending out holiday cards! Even if i do not get them all sent in time, i love picking out the cards, making up my Holiday Card list and filling in a little message in the card for my friends and family. Even if i don’t get to see these people very often, i just like to let them know i am thinking of them :) hehehe…cheesy i know, but true.1 year ago

  • Katie: I’ve been debating whether or not to send out holiday cards this year (doesn’t always happen) — these are so cute though, I’m starting to feel inspired!1 year ago

  • Isabelle: You must love Little House on the Prairie. Those are some of the coziest books ever. (I have yet to see much of the tv series but I hear it’s good too.) And what about the scene with Lucy in Tumnus’ house in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe? So many examples of cozy literature! Those cards are adorable…but I’m not sure i can face the time commitment of holiday cards.1 year ago

  • sarah: Isabelle, LOVE little house, and such a good call on Lucy and Mr Tumnus. I think the cozy thing is also why I loved the children’s cartoon David the Gnome and the book the Secret of NIMH. I guess loving cozy means loving miniatures! :) 1 year ago
