May Pink of Perfection Project

pink of perfection project

Hello, May, you gorgeous thing! You usher in with you more flowers, less rain, a three day weekend, and a new Pink of Perfection Project.

I’m sure most of you don’t wile away the evening hours watching Law & Order as much as I do, but inspired by the wonderful Superhero Journal, I thought a little media detox could do us all some good. Andrea writes about her experiment:

“The purpose of this experiment was simply to have a consciousness around our habits, to see what the impulse was to plug in, what drove the habitual (sometimes obsessive) behavior. What was the feeling that preceded the moment when I would reach for the tv, the internet, the phone? was it loneliness? boredom? What was so scary about simply being in the moment I was in? I was also really curious about what would show up in the space where those other things were. Let me begin by saying that I am amazed at how much it changed our lives in only one week.”

I’m not challenging you to cut yourself off from the world, but I am asking us all to think about the kinds and quality of media that we invite into our lives each day. The goal here is to cut out some of the white noise that doesn’t really serve to benefit us. Is it television for you? Buying tabloids in the supermarket check out line? Letting NPR drone in the background, filling you with anxiety? Endlessly online surfing for shoes that you’ll never buy? Identify where you are getting some possibly toxic media and cut it out for seven days. For me, it’s going to be tv and pointless web surfing. What will it be for you? We might need to set up a support group for this one.

The May Pink of Perfection Project is a 7 Day Media Detox. We’re cutting out the junk and putting Perez Hilton out of business. Will we suddenly find a lot of time and inspiration on our hands? I’m eager to find out.

Here’s how to participate:

  • E-mail me and say you’re on board (remember to include a link to your blog!): sarah@pinkofperfection.com
  • Complete (or attempt to complete) the project.
  • Write about the project on your website or blog by May 31.

  • Sara Rose: I’m pretty sure its time for me to participate in one of these fun POP projects! Especially because I have been ignoring my blog and my writing in lieu of brain trashing (thats what I call mindless mags, tv, and internet surfing). Consider this my official letter of intent to join the board and heres my blog (aka lame-o myspace page) http://www.myspace.com/sarevasmom2 years ago

  • Sarah: Alright, Sara Rose, you’re in!2 years ago

  • EB: I will be leaving the ipod home for 7 days!!! As a daily commuter… this might hurt. I’m in though!2 years ago

  • Sarah: EB, maybe you could finish War & Peace during that time? We shall see… I’ve got you on the list.2 years ago

  • Sara Rose: Oh my God I don’t think I could live without my IPOD for 7 days straight. I have a nickname for my IPOD- it’s actually my “I don’t want to talk to you avoidance apparatus” or my “F*** off Pod.” Not very lady like but whatever. I put my IPOD on and give people the hostile-ly polite look that says “Don’t come near me.” Works like a charm.2 years ago

  • Teacher Girl: Hi Sarah!

Thanks for the challenge… I’m in. I’m going to try to find a better balance between blogging and reading quality blogs (worthy pursuits) and spending too much time mindlessly surfing the net.

Your POP project has inspired me to launch my own project at Teacher Meets World; I am calling it the “The May Day Reading List Project”. Thanks!2 years ago

  • L. at Sisters of the White Rose: This is quite a challenge. I’m in and doing a total media fast starting tomorrow and for the next 7 days. My draft posts are ready to be posted by my sister each day to our blog since I am disconnecting from the internet,email,books,movies,T.V. and magazines. Will I have the fabulous life change of Superhero Journal,or will I be a whimpering mess? I’m willing to find out what life without my favorite diversions is like. L.2 years ago

  • Sara Rose: Sigh. Okay. I have decided for my seven day detox to give up the one form of brain trash that gives me the purest and most unadulterated pointless pleasure. I will not read magazines during my detox period. You don’t know what a huge and gigantanormous sacrifice this is for me. Magazines are my manna. I love magazines to the point of excess. I have subscriptions to at LEAST 25 different magazines. Seriously. Fashion mags. Literary mags. Cooking mags. Decorating. Oprah. Martha Stewart (all of them). Parenting mags. Belebrity gossip and tabloid mags. Do I dare continue. It’s sad and I admit that I have a problem.

On the upnote, because I have so many, I recycle the to all my girlfriends with the condition that they are returned to me so that I can go officially recycle. So every single one of them gets read at least five times before its finally recycled.

Magazine subscriptions are the number one most received gift by myself and I love it. But I will save the rest of my mag-musing for my detox blog. Just know that I read at least, at VERY LEAST, 5 magazines a week.

Yes. I know how pathetic that that sounds.2 years ago

  • tarabu: In an effort to find a simple pattern for a yoga mat bag that even myself (who’s mathematically challenged) could understand, I have discovered the most wonderful place - pink!
I’m in, although I’m not sure how well I’m going to do - I really do set my clock by my 5.20 celebrity scoop on the radio.

  • Anne + Kyle: We’re in! We’ve both come up with our own fairly complicated rubrics for the challenge, but we’ve posted our rules and are starting tonight. I’m only allowing French media and Kyle’s limiting himself to a few choice websites. I’m actually pretty excited. We’ll let you know how it goes!
